Superhero Nursery/ Toddler Room On A Budget

When I found out I was pregnant with a boy I started brainstorming nursery ideas. We decided to go with a superhero nursery theme. Mainly because my husband is a comic book nerd/ superhero fan, and I liked the idea of using primary colors in a baby’s room as opposed to the traditional pastel color pallet. The problem was that my husband and I lived in a one bedroom garage apartment, and there was no chance we’d be moving by the time our son would be born. We decided to create a “nursery” in a corner of our bedroom and to keep everything very minimal to save space and money.

Lucky for me, Hobby Lobby had (and still has) tons of superhero themed decorations for a child’s room. I splurged on some wall decor, and filled in the gaps with some purchases from Etsy and our final product was very simple, but functional. We were short on space, unable to paint due to renting, and I cut out a few things like a glider to save on spending. This is what we ended up with!

All wall decor came from Hobby Lobby. Most of it was on sale, and the shelf was 60% off, due to some damage. The primary colored drawers are also from Hobby Lobby. Originally I saw them for about $150 and passed on them due to the price, but came back later and found it for about $45, so I got it!

Superhero storage bins, changing table, and crib are all from Amazon and linked for you. Batman changing pad cover, crib sheet, and “pow” pillow are all from Etsy, and linked as well!

Once we moved into our first house, we got to set up Holden’s own room, but never got to complete it fully because I soon found out I was pregnant with baby #2, so we decided to move Holden into the spare bedroom to create a superhero toddler room for him. Complete with actual furniture, paint on the walls, and upgraded him to a toddler bed that I hope he will be sleeping in soon (he can climb out of cribs, and is still currently sleeping in our bed.)

So for the past few months we have been working on finishing his bedroom, and finally have it all put together, so I am excited to share the final product!

We decided to move him to the toddler bed since he never slept in his crib to begin with. We are still on quite a tight budget, so we bought the bed frame used off of Facebook’s buy/sell/trade pages for $40.00. The laundry hamper I got off of Amazon. I love that it is almost identical to his bedding and changing pad cover. Holden’s great-grandma made his superhero blanket (there are actually three.) And the wall decor and primary colored drawers are from Hobby Lobby, as mentioned above.

As for the book shelf, Nathan made it! It is made from a wooden pallet that we got for free. There are tons of patterns to make pallet furniture on Pinterest, but he decided to just kind of wing it. I think they turned out wonderfully, and are perfect to keep non-board books out of reach. The books Holden actually reads frequently are in the superhero storage cubes. I ordered the shelf organizer off of Amazon as well. My storage cubes wouldn’t fit if evenly spaced, so I would not recommend that particular item. You get what you pay for in this case!

The dresser belonged to me throughout my childhood, and also was in my mom’s childhood room. Her parents actually bought it as an antique at that time, so this piece is quite old now, but it is such good quality and has nice big, deep drawers that I love. They wall decor (letters and Batman canvas) are from Hobby Lobby. My husband drilled the letters onto the board to create Holden’s name sign that I love. The changing pad cover is linked above as well. All Hobby Lobby wall decor was purchased during a sale on decor item, so they were marked down 50%.

As you can see, the Batman design used to be black to match the crib sheet, but has faded to grey due to frequent washing, but I still love the balance of black and white staples in a room full of so much color. I worried I would be over doing it if everything had loud blues, reds and yellows in the spirit of old fashioned comic books, so I think having some minimalist things helps a lot.

One of my favorite pieces is this shelf that I got from Hobby Lobby. There was some slight damage, so at check out I asked if a discount was available. I don’t typically do that, but I am glad I did because I ended up with a 60% discount. I wanted it above his drawers, but my husband insisted we not drill holes into his carefully painted blue statement wall. Theres a marriage compromise for ya. So this guy hangs by the door, but is loved none the less. We decided to go with a statement wall because I feared an entire navy room would make the room feel dark. It already has bad lighting and a dark feel anyway, so I think we made a good call.

Thats it for the superhero nursery turned toddler room. Not exactly fancy, but on a budget, and very functional. I just wish it could stay this neat and put together on a regular basis!
