How to Create A Neutral Nursery On A Budget (Woodland and Western Themed)

I have been dying to finish this nursery and show off the final product, so I am extremely excited to share our new baby’s nursery with you now. Like I mentioned when I showed pictures from Holden’s Super Hero Room, I didn’t really get to go all out decorating like I had wanted when I was expecting Holden because we were renting a garage apartment, and only had one bedroom to share. I decorated a corner of our bedroom for him, but it just wasn’t the same.

Since then, we have moved into our own home, and found out we were expecting baby #2. I had many dreams for a little girl and big plans for going all out with a little girl nursery, but we are having another boy. So, I decided I wanted to do something different than the superhero theme I did with Holden. The super hero decor is very loud, bold, and full of primary colors. This time I wanted something softer, and hopefully easy to transition into a girl nursery someday.

Although I wanted to go all out, so to say, I am on a tight budget. Working out paying for a birth photographer, doula, and trying to get out of debt on top of trying to plan for another baby, as well as the expenses that pop up for first time home owners can leave us stretched pretty thin by the end of the month. I knew everything I did to decorate this nursery would need to be on a budget, so I reused the old nursery furniture we had with Holden, took advantage of sales, and of course bought some things used.

The crib and changing table we used with Holden were grey, so I knew grey would be the base of the color pallet, which is fine because what doesn’t go with grey? I decided to incorporate a woodland/ western theme into the decorations to add color and make it interesting; plus, there are so many cute western themed decorations available lately that I could not resist. This is the final product:

I like minimalistic rooms and decorations. Now, this is my favorite room in the house and I just enjoy being in it. The wall color is a light grey from Home Depot, but it has a very subtle blue tint to it. Don’t worry, I will link everything I possibly can through out the room and say where I got it.

I’ll start with the dresser. My cheapest find for the nursery because it was actually free. I found it left outside of a dumpster and decided to take it home with me just in case we could use it. This was over a year ago, so I didn’t know we would find a use for it so soon. My husband sanded it down, painted it green, and here we have our final product.

With Holden, I had a small dresser that was perfect for his smaller baby clothing like socks, mittens, hats, and bibs, but it wasn’t great for holding all of his actual clothing. This dresser has deep drawers, but not a place for those small articles of clothing that could get lost in a messy drawer, so I decided to get some containers to keep them on the top of the dresser. A wooden box for socks, and a tin cup for mittens. Both are from Hobby Lobby. I got the wooden frame from Walmart and decided to put some of his ultra sound pictures in it, which turned out nicely. I got the box and tin cup on sale during wooden or metal decor sales. The frame cost $6.00, so total I spent about $10, plus the paint, which I am unsure of the cost.

Above the dresser, we hung a shelf that my husband made from wood found in our back yard. I love how it turned out and was impressed that he just whipped it together. I have a pair of moccasins from that cost $9.00, a cactus that I got as a wedding favor, but repotted in a new pot from Walmart ($1.00), and the picture frame on the shelf was 50% off at Hobby Lobby. So, all together less than $20.00.

As far as the changing table area goes, the table is from Amazon, for $127.00. We bought this for Holden, so it was already ours. To tie in the cactus look, I bought this changing pad cover from Spearmintlove.com. It is muslin material and super soft. Above the changing table, I bought two wooden shelves from Hobby Lobby. I got them on sale for 50% off, so they were $24.00 together. On the shelf I have a wire basket for pacifiers, a woven basket for samples (both from the container store and a total of $18), two more cactus pots, and the letter board we used to announce the pregnancy with. Once the new baby is born I plan to post his birth status and announce his name, which is still currently being debated. I also used a wooden letter E (from Target) that we used as wedding decor, but I repainted a dark blue to add another pop of color. I have my eye on this beautiful indigo swaddle (another pop of blue for the room) also from spearmintlove.com, but it has been out of stock for a while now. I will snag it when I get the chance. The “I love you to the moon and back” wall decor was a gift from Magnolia, I believe. Everything pictured cost me a total of $228.00.

Below the changing table, I have 4 canvas storage cubes from Target that I use to keep diapers, burp cloths, and miscellaneous baby items. They cost $6.00 each. They don’t match the grey perfectly, but they fit perfectly, which is more than I can say for the other storage bins I tried.

Now to my favorite part of the room. The glider and bookshelf! I wanted a nice glider so badly, but know from a store brand new they can cost anywhere from $400 to $600 dollars. I decided to hunt for one on Facebook buy sell trade pages, and scored this one for $150. It is in perfect condition and I am so excited to have it! I wanted an ottoman, but didn’t want to pay for one, so I opted for a poof. This one is from Amazon, for $60.00. One splurge item I bought was this beautiful axis deer print blanket from Etsy. It is so soft and big enough to grow with the boys, so I figured why not. I think it ties in the brown poof, wooden decor, and the grey colored furniture nicely. I believe it cost $60.00.

The bookshelf was mine as a little girl, and my mom’s when she was a little girl. It is an antique and was free! We did paint it green though. On the bookshelf I have a few books, mostly ones Holden will rip pages out of, or are in need of retirement. Some wooden toys (the cars are from Etsy and the truck with blocks was a Christmas gift for Holden.) The lamp and frame are from Target. The frame was on sale for $3.00, and the lamp was $19.99, and the shade was $9.99. The wooden keepsake box is also from Hobby Lobby, $8.00. The final touch is the macramé wall hanging, from Etsy ($60.00.) Total: $387.00 for everything in this picture.

I am not a huge curtain person, but decided this room needed them, so I got these sheer white curtains with green tassels at Target, as well as the curtain rod. I got both on a home decor sale and spent $41.00. The blanket basket ($30.00) is also from Target. Now for one of my favorite items in the room, the blanket ladder. I told my husband I wanted one, but was finding that the style I wanted cost anywhere from $50-$80. I showed him pictures and once again he said, “I can make that!” And he did. He literally went into our back yard, cut down a tree, sanded the wood and assembled it all in a matter of hours. It is beautiful and I am so proud of it, and him! Total: $71.00

Lastly is the crib. The only unfinished part of the room. I’d love to hang something above the crib, and have my eye on these beautiful wooden name signs from The Trendy Timber, but since we do not have a name set, I am waiting on what to do with that wall for the time being. If you have any ideas, please comment them and let me know! The crib is Graco, also from Holden’s nursery, and the sheets are also from spearmintlove.com. They match the changing pad cover. The crib was $179.00, sheets $32, and the mattress was $50.00 from Target, but I got my %15 registry discount and %5 red card discount. The total comes to $251.00.

Decorating this nursery has been on the most fun part of this pregnancy. I love how it turned out and am now just excited to see my new baby in it! All in all the costs of this nursery came to $991.00! I would say that is pretty good considering it takes account the cost of all the nursery furniture, which is the most expensive part. The only thing not accounted for is the paint. Hopefully this can give some of you thrifty moms some inspiration!
